Financing Solar and Energy Efficiency
Solar and energy efficiency measures for your home or business will save you money on utility bills, increase your property value, and reduce your greenhouse gas emissions. Solar is now more affordable than ever yet … yet it’s still a significant investment. Fortunately there are also more clean energy financing options available than ever. Which ones apply to you depend on whether you own property and if so, what type of property. Which financing options are best for you depend on your financial circumstances and other variables. When it comes to clean energy financing, one size does not fit all.

Other Options for Investing in Solar
Not everyone owns a home or commercial property.
Not every home or building or piece of property is suitable for solar for various reasons.
Fortunately there are other ways to participate in supporting solar and clean energy.
- Take a look at the Vote Solar Shared Solar Toolkit for resources and ideas for spreading solar even where the sun may not shine.
- Consider organizing a Solar Garden, a large solar array hosted on a public facility or a church or a community center with multiple subscribers connected to the utility grid. The subscribers purchase a portion of power produced by the array to receive credit on their electric bill. If a facility cannot afford to fund a solar project on its own, groups of small investors can pool their resources to purchase the system, making it truly Community Supported Energy.
- Invest in crowd funded solar projects
- Tell your state representatives to support strong solar policies such as Senate Bill 43, authored by Senator Lois Wolk (D-Davis), to enact the Shared Renewable Energy Self-Generation program. The bill will allow energy utility customers who cannot generate their own renewable energy on site to obtain renewable energy from an off-site renewable energy facility. The bill will also enable schools and local governments to pursue off-site solar opportunities.
- Support the organizations that advocate for these and other robust solar policies at local, state, and federal levels, such as:
